Spring in Texas: Bluebonnets

in Texas

Speaking of Wide Open Spaces

Bluebonnet Panorama

It’s that time of year! The time of year when the parents of Texas drag their babies and pets out into the middle of a ditch, the side of a dangerously busy highway overpass, or trespass on private property to take family photos and trample a perfectly good patch of bluebonnets.

We are no different.

Easter Bluebonnets

Last year, Landry couldn’t understand why we woke her from a perfectly good nap to drive 30 miles and look at weeds in a ditch. But this year?

This year was different. Someone was really excited! (Although it might have had something to do with the expectations of a candy-filled basket.) (I am *so* over candy holidays.)

Easter Bluebonnets

On our way up Highway 6 to Easter dinner in College Station, we passed a beautiful, colorful hill of paints & bluebonnets. We stopped, took pictures, and were on our way. The patch wasn’t very thick but I was happy enough. We got back in the car and on the road to lunch.

And then I saw it.

U-TURN! U-TURN! UTURNUTURNUTURN!

A person-wide break in the roadside brush had revealed a huge field of bluebonnets just off the road. We were probably the 8th or 9th family there at the time. On our way home, there were 30+ cars parked along the highway. 2 hours later, a friend mentioned that it had turned into an all-out frenzy and there were at least 100 cars there.

Happy Spring!

These are the best family in the bluebonnets pictures ever. And that first picture with your daughter on the right… awesome! So is the picture of her and her basket. Okay, all of the pictures are. I’m from Texas and grew up there and we never did this. I feel terribly cheated (and I’m totally being serious here!) I bet your daughter will be so happy to have these pictures when she’s all grown up. :)

Cassidy wore the same dress for Easter! And btw, it’s a crying shame that we have never met up! A shame, I tell you!!

That is gorgeous!! Feeling a little jealous of all the Texas sunshine and baby blue skies and magical fields of flowers. Thanks for sharing though–it brightened up my Monday.

P.S. Got started making my own DIY tabletop this weekend using your tutorial. Can’t wait to paint them and start using them!

Awww, I love it! Totally true that spying a big field of bluebonnets has the potential to get you in a car accident, though – haha! We are loving life in Texas this time of year… before it gets too stinkin’ hot to fathom going outside!

Well color me jealous! There is nothing like that here in San Diego, unless of course you go to the Flower Fields in Carlsbad, but that is not free. So beautiful and how tickled am I to finally see a picture of you and your daughter. Simply gorgeous.

I have always wondered what you look like — thanks for sharing! Such blondies!

Up here in the pacific NW we’re getting to do our version of bluebonnets — TULIPS!

Beautiful pictures! Sadly, my only bluebonnet pictures were snapped on a road trip from Houston to San Antonio after my car’s AC had died. You and your family fared far better–too cute! :)

I live just outside College Station and have some land in the country covered in wildflowers this year. Last weekend we had 3 groups of people stop and take pictures. One group was taking their senior pictures and another actually thanked us for not mowing. What a great year for Texas wildflowers. Love your photos.

I have been on the hunt for that perfect wildflower patch. They seem so thin this year and I am hoping for a late season…maybe??? Highway 6 has never disappointed me! Lucky you!

I can see the vehicle screeching to a 2-wheeled turnaround now. Great pictures, woman! :)

@Sandi can I ask where exactly I am taking my bridal pictures in the College Station area and am looking for a good field of bluebonnets.

I’m out toward Iola, but my flowers are waning and already going to seed. I think I overwatered with the sprinkler. Really not worthy of photos anymore. They were at peek 2 weekends ago. Sorry. Good luck.

Wildflower time in TX – my favorite! Great pictures – most of the time, pictures of bluebonnets never do them justice.

I loved looking at these pictures. I’ve never seen fields of wildflowers like that before, unless I count those that the DOT plants along a few of the highways. Somehow those flowers just don’t seem to compare to these. Happy spring to you as well!
