Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Big, juicy strawberries + decadent, dark chocolate = romantic dessert. Our quiet evening dessert of choice is chocolate covered strawberries. They take no time to make and pair nicely with a bottle of our port.

When we were planning the most important aspect of our wedding – the cake – The Foodie Groom immediately shot down the traditional groom’s cake. He did not want a cake topped with chocolate covered strawberries (booo!). Instead, my software engineer wanted a chocolate sheet cake, the top decorated like Tux. And Tux he got. I think he spent a good chunk of our reception explaining to the non-Linux people everyone just who Tux was :)

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Get organized before you start. You’ll completely cover one strawberry at a time so that the white chocolate can settle into the dark chocolate before the dark chocolate sets. You don’t have to work frantically, but you do need to be quick so the white chocolate doesn’t harden too much in the baggie – recruit your Valentine to help. I did :)

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Dip large, ripe strawberries in dark and white chocolate for a romantic dessert.


  • 12 large strawberries, rinsed, dried, and chilled
  • 5 oz dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1/4 cup white chocolate chips
  • 1 tsp vegetable oil
  • Other equipment needed:
  • Wax paper or plastic wrap
  • Ziploc bag
  • Toothpick or skewer


  1. Place a sheet of wax paper or plastic wrap on a plate big enough to hold all of your strawberries.
  2. Melt dark chocolate in the microwave, cooking for 60 seconds initially, stirring, and then heating in 30 second intervals until completely melted.
  3. Just before you're ready to start dipping, heat white chocolate chips and vegetable oil in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time, stirring until completely melted. Place in a ziploc bag, squish the melted white chocolate down into one corner, and snip off a very small piece of the corner to allow the chocolate to flow out when you squeeze the bag.
  4. Dip a strawberry in chocolate almost up to the leaves. Using a knife or your finger, scrape excess chocolate from the backside of the strawberry and set the strawberry on the prepared plate. Pipe white chocolate in 4-6 straight lines across the strawberry. Using a toothpick, start from the bottom of the strawberry and drag the toothpick through the chocolate to the top of the strawberry (or go from top to bottom, or alternate for different looks).
  5. Repeat for the remaining strawberries.
  6. Chill the strawberries until the chocolate sets (10-15 minutes). Store on a plate, arranged in a single layer, in the fridge.


Yields: 12 strawberries

Wow, these look great! I can’t wait to try them. Your’s look beautiful- I like the idea for my Vday dinner . I was debating making my hubbie’s favorite Chocolate Adobe Pie but I like this idea- or I could always do both :)

LOVE this! great idea about scraping the chocolate off the bottom, too.
