Fresh Plum Margaritas

Red Plum Margarita

One Hundred and Nine degrees.

I know the weather chick said it was “only” 107… but she also told me that we “only” had a 30% chance of rain in late May.

And then it flooded.

Buy my thermometer said 109. So 109 it is.

How do you deal with 109 degrees? I weed the garden with the sprinkler running and then I make margaritas.

And then I hit up the pool.

Red Plum Margarita

I snagged some red and black plums last week on sale and whipped them up into a couple of batches of margaritas. They both yield the same fruity concoction taste-wise, but black plums (above) make a much darker (and therefore harder to photograph) drink than red plums (top).

And either will work just fine to help you almost forget that your back yard feels like a convection oven. And will for another 3 months.

Fresh Plum Margaritas

Fresh red or black plums are cooked into a beautiful red syrup and then blended into the perfect summer margarita.

Ingredients

  • 2 red or black plums, pit removed and cut into 4-8 slices
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup sugar*
  • 1/2 cup lime juice
  • 2 oz orange juice (or orange liqueur)
  • 6 oz tequila
  • Ice
  • Lime wedges, for serving (optional)
  • Salt for rimming glasses (optional)

Instructions

  1. Place the plum slices (skin still on) in a small sauce pan with water and sugar, if using. (If using a sugar substitute, add at the end to taste).
  2. Bring to a boil and simmer covered for 5-7 minutes, until the fruit is very soft and the liquid has taken on the color from the plums.
  3. Let cool a few minutes and then transfer to a blender with the lime juice, orange juice/liqueur, and tequila.
  4. Blend for ~30 seconds, until completely smooth.
  5. Pour over ice into salt-rimmed glasses and serve with lime wedges.

Tangelo Margarita

It’s probably no surprise to any of you, but when I see a new fruit come in season – or priced low enough that I can’t resist hoarding – the first thing that comes to my mind is:

I have tequila at home, right?

Because, really now – what fruit doesn’t make a good margarita? (Besides kiwi. I’ve pretty much given up wasting tequila on that one.)

But tangelos were on fire-sale again so I decided it was time to officially make this one margarita recipe number Twenty…. 22! And just in time for Cinco de Mayo.

Tangelos are a cross between tangerines & pomelos, both of which have been immortalized in margarita form here already. Taste-wise, they’re far closer to tangerines so that’s the route I took.

And speaking of the holy Spring holiday that’s coming this weekend, our Taquitos & Tequila pool party is on Sunday! We’re serving:

And guests have claimed some fabulously delicious dishes like queso and jalapeno poppers. So I’m headed off to do work. I have 100 limes to juice. And a floor to mop.

And if I have time, like 3 walls to de-crayon. But if I hand out margaritas when guests walk through the door, I think I can get away with leaving The Little’s art work up, right?

Tangelo Margaritas

A beautiful orange margarita using fresh lime and tangelo juice.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Stir margarita mix, tangerine juice, and tequila together in an oversized glass or small pitcher.
  2. Run a lime or tangerine wedge around the outside of 2 glasses and dip in salt.
  3. Fill glasses with ice and pour margaritas over.
  4. Rinse and repeat.

Strawberry Margaritas

Strawberry Margaritas

Crammed into the busting-at-the-seams bottom drawer of my freezer is a collection of leftover bowls filled with… leftovers. There’s chili and chicken stock. And something that’s either more chili or possibly a meaty marinara sauce (I’ll find out for sure tomorrow – please let it be chili!).

And then there’s the bowl of strawberry puree. Thankfully the contents are frozen because that bowl was sideways. (I strongly adore organized spaces and strongly dislike the process of organizing them.)

The strawberry puree was leftover from making strawberry cupcakes for The Little’s birthday party last month. And while I would have loved to have used the fresh strawberries that we picked last week…

Strawberry Margaritas

Last week, we took my visiting spring breaker niece and nephews to a local farm to pick strawberries. I had big plans for those strawberries (read: margaritas). And so did the kids (read: total, complete annihilation).

Over 6lb of strawberries and there were less than a dozen left 24 hours later – and 3 of those shouldn’t count because they were put back into the basket with bite marks on them. (Gross.) Apparently, there are no such things as leftovers when growing kids are involved. They were bottomless pits with loads of aggression and the cutest East Texas accents which became less cute every time I had to put them in timeout for trying to drown each other in the pool.

Kids these days, right?

Strawberry Margaritas

I had my eye on Tide & Thyme’s Strawberry Margarita recipe and gave it a little bit of a makeover to use the leftover puree, fresh orange juice, and the leftover homemade margarita mix that I always keep in the fridge for “emergencies.”

Or to celebrate the send-off of those visiting bottomless pits.

The resulting margarita is beautiful, refreshing, and fruity with plenty of strawberry goodness. Go ahead and save yourself the trouble – make a double batch. If you’re anything like me, you won’t have to worry about leftovers this time.

Strawberry Margarita

A margarita worthy of spring and summer, made with fresh strawberries, orange juice, and a homemade margarita mix.

Ingredients

  • 3 oz tequila
  • 3 oz fresh orange juice (from about 2 navel oranges)
  • 4 oz strawberry puree*
  • 4 oz homemade margarita mix
  • 2 glasses of ice
  • Salt or sugar for rimming glasses (optional)
  • The strawberry puree was leftover from tossing 1 tsp of sugar with 1.5 pints chopped strawberries and then pureed after letting it sit at room temp for a while. You can adjust accordingly.

Instructions

  1. Rim two glasses with salt or sugar, if desired.
  2. Fill with ice.
  3. Stir the tequila, OJ, strawberry puree, and margarita mix together and pour over the ice.
  4. Serve, drink, repeat.

Tangerine Margarita

I’m totally loving reading all your responses to the giveaway questions – and watched Elf tonight because of it – but I can’t respond in-line because then I throw off the comment numbering system and then the random generator thingy might just stab me. And then there’s no one here to unload the diswasher. Tragedy.

But winter citrus season – it’s here!

Mostly in drinkable forms, I confess. But it’s still here.

The bins in the produce section that were overflowing with 18 varieties of apples now sport nearly an equal amount of citrus: limes, key limes, 3 varieties of grapefruit, lemons, Meyer lemons, tangerines, clementines… okay, so that’s not 18. But you get it.

Until recently, I’ve only ever eaten tangerines straight or used them in a stir fry. But with a personal goal of margaritaizing (it’s a word) every fruit possible, I set my sights on the 5-for-a-buck tangerines last week. It was hard to pass up, with the 5-for-a-buck baseball-sized limes.

What you get is a smooth margarita perfect for utilizing those tangerines this winter. And perfect for replacing those mimosas at brunch.

Tangerine Margaritas

Clementines are next. I’m holding out for the windfall of free clementines from my parents’ neighbors’ trees. If I had to guess, I’d say there were 300+ clementines on their two trees. Happy, happy hour indeed!
